Mentoring Events and Workshops

Sticky Floors
Tuesday 7th of February 2017, 6.30 – 10pm

Is your mind honed for opportunity? Do you project confidence? … or… Is your subconscious holding you back? Nice girls don’t get the corner office!  At least that is what we hear – but it is all too easy to lay blame on the Glass Ceiling. So, what can you do to improve your mind-set AND your opportunities? In this workshop we will have a range of speakers who work as personal coaches, and can help you think differently to overcome the subconscious blocks that are holding you back in your career.

Breaking The Glass Ceiling
Tuesday 4th April 2017 6.30 – 10pm

How do you attract more women into your business? How do you plan career paths that are supportive of women? How do you make your environment more female friendly?  We will have a range of speakers to discuss best practice for attracting and keeping more women in your workplace. If you would like critical feedback on any of your own processes please bring samples, and case studies along. We encourage delegates to openly discuss their experience of job specifications, and interviews, as well as expectations for career progression.

Crossing the Great Divide
Tuesday 5th September 2017 6.30 – 10pm

Are you looking to change career? Do you want more security at work? Do you want to move into a larger organisation? If you are looking for a change this is the event for you. We will have speakers who can help you identify, plan for, and fill common gaps in skills, and experience when taking a sideways step in your career.  We will have case studies of best practice from industry on boarding schemes to help you think about where your next opportunity lies.

Critical Skills for Leadership
Tuesday 7th November 2017 6.30 – 10pm

Did you know that mentors routinely give men and women very different advice? While men are told to fill specific gaps in experience, and build much needed skill-sets, women are told to improve confidence. The subconscious bias in this advice is responsible for holding a lot of women back from Leadership roles.  In this workshop we will explore what skills and experience are needed to get into a Leadership role, and what special qualities are desired at the highest levels.

All Around The Blockchain
Blockchain is of growing interest, not just in Fintech, but also in the legal sector and security. This year Girl Geek Scotland will be running workshops for women in Blockchain, followed by a Hackathon which will be open for all.

Part 2: Sunday March 5th 2 – 5pm
We are looking to create the ultimate in supported workshop for women in tech. Teams of 2-3 people of mixed competence level, will work intensively with an advanced developer coach on a project. Applications are invited from beginners and intermediate developers (in any general purpose language) who would like to extend their programming skills and gain some experience with Blockchain.

We will also be looking for applications from complete newbies up to intermediates who want to develop front end skills. Again, teams of 2 – 3 people will be supported by our front-end coaches.

Hackathon for Entrepreneurs – All Around The Blockchain
Partnering With Scottish Legal Hackers

Part 1 – Sunday March 26th 2017 2 – 5pm

Part 2 – Sunday April 23rd 2017 2 – 5pm
No more sleep deprived, beer intense, and pizzatastic, whole weekend-athons! We are making our Hackathons more female friendly. We will be splitting our Hackathon over 2, 1/2 day events, which are a month apart. This gives people the opportunity to develop a project with all the excitement and enthusiasm of a traditional hackathon, and without the downsides. After the first afternoon you will be able to work remotely with your team on the project. So, you can work around your busy schedule and still submit a winning project.

Teams will be split into front and back end developers, and business development. Event details and Prizes will be announced nearer the time.

NEWS: Volunteering, Mentoring, and Programme for 2017

We have 3 announcements that will follow in the next few weeks.

  • Next Mentoring Event in 2016

So please look out for details that will follow before the end of the year. Girl Geek Scotland has gone through massive growth this year. After being dormant for a while we relaunched in February, aiming to rebuild our community. The truth is we were unprepared for demand. Each event we have held was sold out to max capacity, and our last event had a waiting list that was almost as long as the delegate list.

More Mentors Needed at Girl Geek Scotland

We are keen to get more mentors to sign-up and for support in helping us match mentors and mentees. If your organisation can help us find more mentors please email us at lauren@girlgeekscotland.com.

Mentoring Programme Update

We knew (we had listened!) that you wanted a Mentoring Programme. We expected a small group of around 30 and by the close of the second event we had over 100 people signed up. What this means is that we have struggled with the workload of matching people with mentors. I want you to know that we are still working on it and we expect to find mentors for everyone by the close of the year. To meet this demand and to progress our vision for the year ahead, we have been focusing on growing our team. We now have 12 volunteers! This will help us to speed up the matching process for our Mentoring Programme, while still curating the world class panel events that we have become known for. Please remember that most of us work full time and squeeze Girl Geek Scotland volunteering into coffee breaks and after hours effort. So although we may not get back to you immediately, please know that we are working hard behind the scenes to create events and a service, that will help you in your career.

NEWS: Entrepreneurs needed for The Enterprise Challenge

Our parent organisations Edinburgh Napier University and Bright Red Triangle are currently looking for local businesses to take part in their TEC programme (otherwise known as The Enterprise Challenge) from 26 – 30 September 2016, which is led by the Centre for Entrepreneurship teaching team at Edinburgh Napier University.

It involves having a group of students look at your business or a specific issue for your business, and present findings after a week of research for you – and it’s free!

They need entrepreneurs that are reasonably well established and have been trading for upwards of a year. Edinburgh Napier University runs The Enterprise Challenge where a group of students work together on entrepreneurial business challenges. We are looking for businesses that may be interested in the offer of a potentially valuable, objective view of your current business and some fresh ideas for the future.

At the end of the week the students will present their suggestions as to how you should grow your business. Hopefully you will get some worthwhile ideas that you can use in developing your business. All information that you divulge will be treated in the strictest confidence and will not be used outside this project.

Your availability and access requirements are:

  • 2pm on Mon 16 September 2016 for 2-3 hours with a 3 min introduction / overview of your business to present to the group
  • Students to have access to you by phone or email on a daily basis (for the week, 26 – 30 September)
  • Then if possible for you to join us for presentations on Friday 30 September from 1pm for about an hour (we will create a timetable to reduce the impact on your schedule and give you notice)

Please let Cilla Richards, Project Coordinator, Bright Red Triangle at Napier University know if you or anyone you know would like to participate. Contact: c.richards@napier.ac.uk | +44 (0)131 455 4372

ARTICLE: Introducing – Cyber Angels

By Samantha Leeman, Bright Purple Resourcing. Original article available here.

At Girl Geek Scotland our aim is to grow a community of professionals and entrepreneurs who are able to support each other at entry-level and throughout their careers in computing, creativity, and enterprise. A big part of this is ensuring that there are role models for everyone to learn from and aspire to.

The skills shortage in Cybersecurity is something that is and continues to be well documented; by 2018 there will be a global shortage of 4.2 million people who work in the sector. And according to (ISC)2’s latest study, only 6% of those working in the sector are women, a drop of 4% after the figure remained unchanged for 2 years at 10%.

Keen to address the lack of role models for women in Cybersecurity, Samantha Leeman from Bright Purple Resourcing, also one of our Event Managers at Girl Geek Scotland, is running an event in Edinburgh on the 22nd September at Codebase on Castle Terrace, 6pm, until 9pm.

We would encourage anyone reading this to join us on the 22nd; if you are currently working in, or interested in learning more about Cybersecurity. The event is FREE and a great opportunity for you to network, learn more about the sector, and of course meet some role models!

Speakers at the event include Alison McAlroy – Information Security Manager – Tesco Bank, Chelsea Sievewright – Information, Risk and Security Consultant – Prudential, Jamie Graves – CEO – ZoneFox, and Laura Johnston – Associate Consultant – PwC.

The world of Cybersecurity has moved from how the media depicts a Cybersecurity expert; typically; a nerdy male sat alone on his laptop in-front of a black screen with green coding.

One of the key skills that employers are looking for is “communication”. Some of the biggest challenges people working in the sector currently face are; communicating with multiple stakeholders; and delivering business objectives whilst ensuring risk management continues to be prioritised.

Studies over the last 30 years have consistently indicated that women are better communicators than men; and these skills are important than ever, as the Cybersecurity sector continues to adapt to changing technologies.

Chelsea Sievewright – Information Risk and Security Consultant at Prudential said, “I’m delighted to be speaking at Girl Geek Scotland’s even on the 22nd of September, it’s great to have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge in a supportive and relaxed environment. Samantha is doing a brilliant job organising this event in Edinburgh, and I’m really looking forward to it. It is a wonderful opportunity to network with other women working in Information Security and also showcase the great talent we have in Scotland. It’s no secret that women are severely underrepresented in the sector and I’m always looking for ways to help promote it to younger women.

Events like these provide a channel for collaborations and new ideas on how we can help bridge the skills gap in the future.”

So come and join Girl Geek Scotland for FREE on the 22nd September at Codebase 6pm – 9pm, you are all welcome. Event link here. (This is event is sold out as of 1 September, but there is an active waiting list so do put your name down and you will be notified if tickets become available).
